About the artist
Pearl Jam formed in Seattle in 1990, emerging from the ashes of Mother Love Bone after that band's singer Andrew Wood died. Guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament, both veterans of Green River and Mother Love Bone, recruited guitarist Mike McCready and, after a demo tape reached him in San Diego, vocalist Eddie Vedder. Drummer roles rotated over the years before Matt Cameron, formerly of Soundgarden, settled into the seat around 1998.
Their 1991 debut album Ten, powered by songs like «Alive», «Even Flow», «Black», and «Jeremy», became one of the defining records of the grunge era and one of the best-selling debuts in rock history. Rather than chase that success, the band pushed toward rawer, more experimental territory on subsequent albums, resisting mainstream pop conventions and famously boycotting Ticketmaster in the mid-1990s over ticket pricing practices, a stand that cost them touring opportunities but cemented their reputation for principle over commercial ease.
Over more than a decade of studio albums, extensive touring, and a famously loyal live bootleg culture, Pearl Jam became one of the most enduring and respected bands to come out of the Seattle scene, standing alongside Nirvana and Soundgarden as pillars of 1990s alternative rock while carving out a distinct, socially engaged identity of their own.
