About the artist
Pavement is an American indie rock band formed in 1989 in Stockton, California, led by songwriter and guitarist Stephen Malkmus alongside Scott Kannberg (also known as Spiral Stairs). Rounded out over the years by bassist Mark Ibold, drummer Steve West and percussionist Bob Nastanovich, the group became one of the defining acts of American underground rock in the 1990s, releasing music on Matador Records.
Their sound blended lo-fi production, angular guitar interplay and Malkmus's wry, oblique lyrics, drawing on influences from The Fall to classic American rock while resisting the polish of mainstream alternative music. Albums such as Slanted and Enchanted, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and Wowee Zowee are widely regarded as landmarks of 90s indie rock, prized for their looseness and unpredictability.
Pavement split in 1999 as Malkmus sought to step away from touring, but their influence on subsequent generations of indie and slacker rock has only grown, and the band has reunited periodically for live shows, including in 2010 and 2020.
