Pantera

Pantera are an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas, widely regarded as one of the most influential groups in the genre's history. Formed in the early 1980s by brothers Vinnie Paul (drums) and Dimebag Darrell (guitar) along with bassist Rex Brown, the band began as a glam metal act before undergoing a dramatic stylistic shift at the turn of the 1990s, adopting singer Phil Anselmo and forging a heavier, more aggressive sound.

With the 1990 album Cowboys from Hell, Pantera pioneered what became known as groove metal, characterized by mid-tempo, syncopated guitar riffing rather than the breakneck speed of thrash. Their 1992 follow-up Vulgar Display of Power, featuring tracks like «Walk» and «This Love», is often cited as a genre landmark, cementing their reputation for crushing heaviness paired with genuine groove. Albums like Far Beyond Driven and The Great Southern Trendkill further expanded their influence throughout the 1990s.

Dimebag Darrell's distinctive guitar tone and technical yet groove-driven playing, alongside Anselmo's intense vocal delivery, defined Pantera's identity and left a lasting imprint on countless metal and nu-metal bands that followed. The band's legacy was overshadowed by internal tensions that led to their breakup in the early 2000s and by the tragic murder of Dimebag Darrell in 2004, but their catalogue remains foundational listening in heavy metal.
