Panchiko are a British band whose story became one of the internet's most celebrated musical mysteries. Formed around 1998 in Nottingham, England, the group reportedly recorded a lo-fi alternative rock album called D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L before quietly disbanding, leaving almost no trace of their existence. For nearly two decades the music sat forgotten until a damaged, warped copy of the CD was found in an Oxfam charity shop and uploaded to a 4chan thread in 2016, sparking a years-long online hunt by fans trying to track down the anonymous musicians behind it.

The search eventually succeeded, and in 2020 the original members resurfaced, confirming the album's authenticity and releasing a remastered version along with demos from a companion EP, «Kicking Cars». Panchiko's sound blends fuzzy shoegaze textures, jangly indie guitar work, and melancholic pop songwriting, drawing comparisons to acts like Weezer and early Death Cab for Cutie, filtered through deliberately degraded, tape-damaged production that became part of its mystique.

Songs such as «Laputa» and «All They Wanted» capture the wistful, homemade charm that made the story resonate, and the band's unlikely rediscovery turned them from an urban legend into a genuinely active project, touring and recording new material for audiences who found them through internet folklore rather than traditional promotion.
