About the artist
Nirvana was an American rock band formed in 1987 in Aberdeen, Washington, and is regarded as the band that brought the grunge movement out of the Pacific Northwest underground and into mainstream consciousness. The classic lineup consisted of singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl, who joined in 1990. Their raw, distortion-heavy sound fused punk aggression with pop songcraft, built on Cobain's confessional, often cryptic lyrics and a knack for melodies that felt both anthemic and unsettling.
The band's breakthrough came with the 1991 album Nevermind, led by the single «Smells Like Teen Spirit», which unexpectedly toppled Michael Jackson from the top of the charts and effectively ended the commercial dominance of hair metal. Songs like «Come as You Are», «Lithium», and «Heart-Shaped Box» from the follow-up album In Utero cemented their reputation for combining abrasive noise with genuine emotional weight. Their earlier record Bleach, released on Sub Pop, already showed the sludgy, Melvins-influenced foundations of their sound.
Cobain's death in April 1994 abruptly ended the band, but Nirvana's influence on rock music proved lasting, shaping countless alternative and post-grunge acts that followed. Grohl went on to found Foo Fighters, while Novoselic remained active in music and activism. Decades later, Nirvana's catalog continues to be discovered by new generations, and the band is frequently cited as one of the defining acts of 1990s rock.
