About the artist
Nina Simone, born Eunice Waymon in 1933 in Tryon, North Carolina, was one of the most singular voices in twentieth-century American music. Trained as a classical pianist and dreaming of a concert career, she adopted the stage name Nina Simone while playing piano in Atlantic City nightclubs, partly to keep her family from finding out. When a club owner insisted she sing as well as play, her career as a jazz and blues vocalist was born almost by accident, and it quickly outgrew any single genre label.
Over a career spanning decades, Simone moved fluidly between jazz, blues, folk, gospel, classical and soul, backed by her formidable piano technique and a voice of rare depth and control. Songs like «Feeling Good», «I Put a Spell on You», «Sinnerman» and «I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free» became signature performances, while «Mississippi Goddam» and «Four Women» established her as one of the most outspoken artistic voices of the American civil rights movement.
Simone recorded more than forty studio albums and remained a towering, uncompromising presence in music until her death in 2003. She received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2000 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, cementing her legacy as an artist whose fusion of technical mastery and political conviction has influenced generations of musicians across genres.
