Sobre o artista
Nina Simone, nascida Eunice Waymon em 1933 em Tryon, Carolina do Norte, foi uma das vozes mais singulares da musica norte-americana do seculo XX. Formada como pianista classica e com o sonho de uma carreira de concertista, adotou o nome artistico Nina Simone enquanto tocava piano em clubes noturnos de Atlantic City, em parte para que a familia nao descobrisse. Quando o dono de um clube exigiu que ela tambem cantasse, sua carreira como vocalista de jazz e blues nasceu quase por acaso e rapidamente ultrapassou qualquer rotulo de genero.
Ao longo de decadas, Simone transitou com fluidez entre jazz, blues, folk, gospel, musica classica e soul, apoiada em uma tecnica pianistica formidavel e uma voz de rara profundidade e controle. Faixas como «Feeling Good», «I Put a Spell on You», «Sinnerman» e «I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free» se tornaram interpretacoes marcantes, enquanto «Mississippi Goddam» e «Four Women» a consolidaram como uma das vozes artisticas mais engajadas do movimento pelos direitos civis nos Estados Unidos.
Simone gravou mais de quarenta albuns de estudio e permaneceu uma presenca imponente e intransigente na musica ate sua morte em 2003. Recebeu o Grammy Hall of Fame Award em 2000 e foi incluida no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame em 2018, consolidando seu legado como artista cuja fusao de maestria tecnica e conviccao politica influenciou geracoes de musicos de diferentes generos.
