Sobre el artista
Nina Simone, nacida Eunice Waymon en 1933 en Tryon, Carolina del Norte, fue una de las voces mas singulares de la musica estadounidense del siglo XX. Formada como pianista clasica y con el sueno de una carrera de concertista, adopto el nombre artistico de Nina Simone mientras tocaba piano en clubes nocturnos de Atlantic City, en parte para que su familia no se enterara. Cuando el dueno de un club le exigio que ademas cantara, su carrera como vocalista de jazz y blues nacio casi por accidente y pronto desbordo cualquier etiqueta de genero.
A lo largo de decadas, Simone se movio con fluidez entre el jazz, el blues, el folk, el gospel, la musica clasica y el soul, apoyada en una tecnica pianistica formidable y una voz de rara profundidad y control. Temas como «Feeling Good», «I Put a Spell on You», «Sinnerman» e «I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free» se convirtieron en interpretaciones emblematicas, mientras que «Mississippi Goddam» y «Four Women» la consolidaron como una de las voces artisticas mas comprometidas del movimiento por los derechos civiles en Estados Unidos.
Simone grabo mas de cuarenta albumes de estudio y siguio siendo una presencia imponente e intransigente en la musica hasta su muerte en 2003. Recibio el Grammy Hall of Fame Award en 2000 y fue incluida en el Rock and Roll Hall of Fame en 2018, consolidando su legado como una artista cuya fusion de maestria tecnica y conviccion politica ha influido en generaciones de musicos de distintos generos.
