Nightwish

Nightwish are a Finnish symphonic metal band from Kitee, formed in 1996 by keyboardist and main songwriter Tuomas Holopainen together with guitarist Emppu Vuorinen. From the outset the band fused heavy metal with orchestral arrangements, folk influences and operatic vocals, a formula that made them pioneers of the symphonic metal genre and one of the most successful metal exports from Finland. Their early lineup featured classically trained soprano Tarja Turunen, whose soaring vocals defined breakthrough albums such as «Oceanborn» (1998), «Wishmaster» (2000) and «Century Child» (2002).

The band's global profile rose dramatically with «Once» (2004), which produced the hit single «Wish I Had an Angel» and pushed Nightwish onto American film soundtracks and MTV rotation. Turunen's departure in 2005 marked a major turning point, followed by further vocalist changes over the years, with Marco Hietala remaining a key male voice and songwriting presence throughout much of the band's history.

Nightwish's music is built on grand orchestral scope, cinematic storytelling and dramatic contrasts between delicate melody and crushing heaviness, heard in songs like «Ghost Love Score», «Nemo» and «Amaranth». Holopainen's conceptual songwriting, often drawing on fantasy, nature and philosophy, along with the band's elaborate live shows, has kept Nightwish at the forefront of symphonic and progressive metal for over two decades.
