Nick Drake

Nick Drake was an English singer-songwriter and guitarist whose brief career in the late 1960s and early 1970s produced a small but enormously influential body of work. Raised in Tanworth-in-Arden, England, he emerged from the Cambridge folk scene with a hushed, intricate guitar style built on unusual open tunings and cluster chords, paired with a soft, husky voice and melancholic, poetic lyrics.

His three studio albums — Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and the stark, largely solo Pink Moon — moved from lush, string-and-jazz-tinged folk arrangements toward increasingly bare, intimate recordings. Songs such as «River Man», «Northern Sky» and the title track «Pink Moon» exemplify his ability to conjure vivid atmosphere from minimal means, blending folk, chamber-pop and a quiet sense of unease.

Drake received almost no commercial recognition while alive, struggled with depression, and withdrew from performing after Pink Moon's release; he died in 1974 at 26 following a prescription-drug overdose whose intent remains unclear. In the decades since, his catalog has been rediscovered and championed by countless later songwriters, and he is now regarded as one of the most influential figures in English folk music, his understated melancholy echoing through generations of singer-songwriters.
