About the artist
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds formed in the early 1980s out of the ashes of Cave's earlier post-punk band The Birthday Party, taking shape between Melbourne and London/Berlin. The group has always centered on Cave's baritone voice and literary, often gothic lyricism, backed by shifting instrumentation that has ranged from abrasive noise to stark piano ballads and orchestral sweep.
Early albums like From Her to Eternity and The Firstborn Is Dead, made while the band was based in Berlin, fused blues and gospel structures with a bleak, cinematic atmosphere. That evolved through darker, more theatrical work such as Your Funeral… My Trial and Tender Prey, the latter containing «The Mercy Seat», a narrative death-row song that became one of the band's defining pieces and has been covered widely, including by Johnny Cash.
Over four decades the lineup has changed considerably — longtime members Mick Harvey and Blixa Bargeld eventually departed — while multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis became Cave's closest creative partner, pushing the band's later records toward more textured, electronic-tinged soundscapes. Songs like «Red Right Hand» and «Into My Arms» show the band's range, from menacing rock to spare, hymn-like balladry, cementing their reputation as one of the most singular acts in alternative rock.
