About the artist
New Order emerged in Manchester in 1980 from the surviving members of Joy Division — Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris — following the death of singer Ian Curtis. Joined by keyboardist Gillian Gilbert, the band moved away from Joy Division's post-punk gloom toward a hybrid of guitar-driven rock and emerging dance and electronic music, becoming one of the defining acts to bridge the two worlds in the 1980s.
Their sound combined Sumner's melodic, often melancholic vocals and guitar with Hook's distinctive high, lead-style basslines and increasingly prominent synthesizers and drum machines. The 1983 single «Blue Monday» became the best-selling 12-inch single in UK chart history and remains a landmark fusion of post-punk sensibility with club-ready electronic production, hugely influential on synth-pop and techno.
Albums such as «Movement», «Power, Corruption & Lies», «Low-Life», «Brotherhood» and «Technique» charted the band's evolution, with singles like «Bizarre Love Triangle», «True Faith», «Temptation» and «Ceremony» becoming genre staples. The band also recorded as England New Order for the 1990 World Cup anthem «World in Motion». Peter Hook left in 2007, with Tom Chapman later taking over bass duties, but the group's blend of rock and dance remains a touchstone for alternative and electronic music alike.
