Misfits

The Misfits are an American punk rock band formed in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey, widely credited as originators of the horror punk subgenre. The founding lineup of vocalist Glenn Danzig, bassist Jerry Only, and drummer Manny Martínez fused raw punk energy with melodic, 50s-rockabilly-influenced hooks, wrapping the songs in horror-movie imagery and iconography that became inseparable from the band’s identity, including the now-iconic «Crimson Ghost» skull logo.

With guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein (Jerry Only’s brother) joining the lineup, the band released the albums «Walk Among Us» and «Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood», both now regarded as foundational records of early-1980s hardcore punk, alongside a run of influential singles and EPs including «Static Age» material later released posthumously. Songs such as «Last Caress», «Hybrid Moments», «Where Eagles Dare» and «Die, Die My Darling» became staples covered by acts across punk, metal and alternative rock.

The original band disbanded in 1983, after which Danzig went on to form Samhain and later Danzig, while Jerry Only retained the rights to the Misfits name after prolonged legal disputes and eventually reunited with Doyle to perform and record as the Misfits again. Their horror-punk blueprint proved enormously influential, shaping generations of punk, metal, and alternative musicians long after the original lineup’s breakup.
