About the artist
Metric are a Canadian rock band formed in Toronto in 1998, fronted by singer and keyboardist Emily Haines alongside guitarist James Shaw, with Joules Scott-Key on drums and Joshua Winstead on bass. Their sound blends synth-driven new wave textures with guitar-based indie rock, giving them a sharp, danceable edge that set them apart from many of their Canadian indie-rock peers.
The band built a devoted following through albums such as «Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?», «Live It Out», and «Fantasies», with songs like «Help I'm Alive» and «Gold Guns Girls» becoming staples of their live shows. Their music often carries political and social commentary, addressing themes of consumerism, media, and modern alienation, delivered through Haines's distinctive vocal presence.
Haines and Shaw are also known for their involvement with the Toronto collective Broken Social Scene, connecting Metric to the wider community of Canadian indie musicians. Metric has continued releasing albums and touring internationally, maintaining a consistent lineup and a reputation as one of Canada's most enduring indie rock exports.
