Mazzy Star

Mazzy Star is an American band formed in 1989 by vocalist Hope Sandoval and guitarist David Roback, who had met through the Paisley Underground scene of Los Angeles in the mid-1980s. Roback had previously played in Rain Parade and Opal, and after Kendra Smith left Opal on tour, Hope Sandoval stepped in; the pair eventually renamed the project Mazzy Star. Their sound became known for its hazy, reverb-drenched blend of dream pop, folk and psychedelic rock, anchored by Sandoval's hushed, intimate vocals.

The band released four studio albums across more than two decades: «She Hangs Brightly» (1990), «So Tonight That I Might See» (1993), «Among My Swan» (1996) and «Seasons of Your Day» (2013). Their best-known song, «Fade into You», became a defining alternative rock single of the 1990s and introduced the band to a much wider audience, while tracks like «Halah» and «Into Dust» reflect their signature atmospheric, slow-burning style. The gap between albums — sometimes spanning many years — became part of the band's mystique, as did their reluctance to court mainstream visibility.

Mazzy Star's minimalist, mood-driven sound has had a lasting influence on dream pop and indie rock acts that followed, prized for its restraint and emotional depth rather than commercial polish.
