About the artist
Mayhem are a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1984 in Oslo, widely regarded as one of the founding acts of the second-wave black metal movement. Their early years were shaped by extreme, theatrical live shows and a deliberately harsh, lo-fi aesthetic that became a genre blueprint. The band gained notoriety in the early 1990s through a series of tragic and violent events surrounding its members, which became inseparable from their public image, though the music itself — raw, dissonant, and ritualistic — remains their lasting legacy.
Their 1994 album «De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas» is considered a cornerstone of black metal, praised for its atmospheric guitar work and unsettling production. Songs such as «Freezing Moon», «Funeral Fog» and «Pagan Fears» are frequently cited as genre-defining tracks, influencing countless bands across extreme metal. Mayhem continued recording and touring in later decades, cementing their status as elder statesmen of Norwegian black metal.
Despite numerous lineup changes over four decades, Mayhem has retained a consistent commitment to uncompromising, abrasive sound. Their influence extends well beyond black metal into broader extreme music culture, and they remain a reference point whenever the genre's origins are discussed.
