Matchbox Twenty

Matchbox Twenty is an American rock band formed in Orlando, Florida, in the mid-1990s, fronted by singer Rob Thomas alongside guitarists Kyle Cook and Paul Doucette (also drums/vocals), guitarist/keyboardist Adam Gaynor and bassist Brian Yale. Their 1996 debut «Yourself or Someone Like You» turned the band into one of the defining acts of post-grunge, driven by singles like «Push», «3 AM» and «Real World».

Matchbox Twenty’s sound blends the muscular hooks of ‘70s arena rock with the guitar-driven textures of ‘90s alternative rock, positioning them closer to Pearl Jam or R.E.M. than to the grunge bands they were initially lumped in with. Rob Thomas’s distinctive, emotive vocal delivery became a signature of the band and later fueled his successful solo career, including the hit collaboration «Smooth» with Santana.

Follow-up albums such as «Mad Season» and «More Than You Think You Are» produced further hits like «Bent», «If You’re Gone» and «Unwell», cementing the band’s presence on adult alternative and Top 40 radio for over a decade. Matchbox Twenty remains one of the best-selling rock acts to emerge from the late 1990s.
