About the artist
Mastodon is an American heavy metal band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2000. The lineup — bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor — met through the Atlanta metal scene and quickly forged a sound rooted in sludge metal but expanded with progressive, technical and psychedelic elements.
The band built its reputation through a run of ambitious concept albums, exploring themes ranging from Moby-Dick to elemental mythology and personal loss, with records like «Crack the Skye» widely praised for their complexity and emotional weight. Songs such as «Blood and Thunder» and «Oblivion» showcase their trademark mix of crushing riffs, intricate time signatures and layered vocal harmonies.
Over time Mastodon’s sound evolved toward cleaner vocals and more accessible production while retaining its heavy core, reflected in later work like «Sultan’s Curse» and «Show Yourself». The band is regarded as one of the most significant acts in modern progressive and sludge metal, influencing a generation of heavy bands.
