Manchester Orchestra

Manchester Orchestra is an indie rock band from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in the mid-2000s around frontman Andy Hull. Despite the name, the group has no connection to the English city of Manchester — it was chosen simply as a fitting-sounding band name. Over several studio albums the band built a reputation for emotionally raw, confessional songwriting paired with dynamic arrangements that swing between hushed acoustic passages and heavy, distorted guitar walls.

Hull's voice — strained, vulnerable, and instantly recognizable — became the band's signature, often carrying lyrics about faith, mortality, family, and personal crisis. The band is frequently grouped with the wave of emotionally intense indie and post-emo acts of the 2000s and 2010s, though their sound has continually evolved, incorporating more orchestral and atmospheric textures in later records.

Beyond the main band, Andy Hull and guitarist Robert McDowell have worked together on the side project Bad Books and on film and television scoring, including work connected to acclaimed prestige TV projects, which broadened the band's audience beyond traditional rock circles. Manchester Orchestra remains known for its devoted fanbase and consistently praised live performances.
