Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, widely credited with popularizing Southern rock during the 1970s. Originally formed in 1964 under different names before settling on Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1969, the band built its identity around triple-guitar interplay, blues- and country-infused songwriting, and frontman Ronnie Van Zant's distinctive storytelling lyrics about Southern life, hardship, and pride.

The band's signature songs, «Sweet Home Alabama» and «Free Bird», became defining anthems of American rock, showcased through extended, improvisational live performances that highlighted the interplay between multiple guitarists. Other tracks such as «Simple Man», «Tuesday's Gone», and «That Smell» further cemented their reputation for blending raw emotional depth with technical musicianship. Known for their relentless touring schedule, Lynyrd Skynyrd built a reputation as one of the most formidable live acts of the era.

At the height of their popularity, a 1977 plane crash killed several members, including Ronnie Van Zant, abruptly ending the band's original incarnation. The surviving members reformed a decade later with Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie's younger brother, taking over as lead vocalist, and the band has continued to tour and record in the following decades, with guitarist Gary Rossington remaining a key link to the original lineup for much of that time.
