About the artist
Lou Reed was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist best known as the frontman and principal songwriter of The Velvet Underground, the pioneering New York band whose experimental fusion of rock, avant-garde noise, and unflinching lyrical subject matter proved deeply influential on punk, alternative, and art rock long after the group’s commercial obscurity in its own time. His writing brought a literary, streetwise voice to rock music, addressing addiction, sexuality, and urban life with a directness few of his contemporaries attempted.
After the Velvet Underground disbanded, Reed built a prolific and restless solo career. His 1972 album Transformer, produced with David Bowie and Mick Ronson, gave him his best-known song, «Walk on the Wild Side», and further cemented his role as a chronicler of New York’s underground culture. Records like Coney Island Baby and later Street Hassle continued to mine his distinctive blend of melodic songcraft and unvarnished storytelling, while other projects, most notably Metal Machine Music, showed his willingness to alienate audiences in pursuit of pure artistic experimentation.
Over a career spanning several decades, Reed collaborated with a wide range of artists and remained a defining voice of downtown New York rock. He died on October 27, 2013, following complications from a liver transplant, leaving behind a body of work regarded as foundational to rock’s more literate and experimental traditions.
