About the artist
Live is an American alternative rock band formed in York, Pennsylvania in 1988, featuring vocalist Ed Kowalczyk, guitarist Chad Taylor, bassist Patrick Dahlheimer and drummer Chad Gracey, who had known each other since childhood. The band broke through commercially with their second album, Throwing Copper (1994), which became a multi-platinum success and produced hits such as «I Alone», «Selling the Drama», «Lightning Crashes» and «All Over You».
Their sound fuses post-grunge intensity with anthemic, spiritually inflected songwriting, marked by Kowalczyk's distinctive vocal delivery and lyrics touching on themes of faith, connection and mortality. Follow-up albums like Secret Samadhi (1997) and The Distance to Here (1999) continued their run of radio success, with the latter yielding «The Dolphin's Cry».
In 2009 Kowalczyk departed to pursue a solo career, and the remaining members continued for a time with singer Chris Shinn before Kowalczyk eventually rejoined. Live remains best known as one of the defining rock bands of the 1990s alternative era, with Throwing Copper standing as their signature achievement.
