About the artist

Kino (КИНО) were one of the most influential Soviet rock bands of the 1980s, formed in Leningrad and fronted by singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter Viktor Tsoi. Emerging from the city's underground rock club scene alongside acts like Akvarium, the band fused new wave and post-punk influences with introspective, poetic Russian lyrics, giving voice to a generation coming of age during perestroika.

Albums such as Gruppa Krovi and Zvezda po Imeni Solntse produced enduring anthems including «Группа крови», «Кукушка», and «Хочу перемен», the latter becoming an unofficial protest hymn associated with the political upheavals of the late Soviet era. Tsoi's brooding charisma and the band's stark, guitar-driven sound made Kino a defining act of Soviet-era rock, bridging underground counterculture and mainstream popularity in a way few of their peers achieved.

Viktor Tsoi died in a car accident in 1990, at the height of the band's popularity, and Kino disbanded shortly after. Decades later, in 2019, surviving members Yuri Kasparyan, Alexander Titov, and Igor Tikhomirov revived the group's live performances, pairing Tsoi's original vocal recordings with a live band, and the project continues to perform and remaster the band's catalogue for new generations of listeners.
