King Gnu

King Gnu is a Japanese alternative rock band formed in Tokyo in 2013, initially performing under the names Srv.Vinci and Mrs.Vinci before adopting their current name in 2017. The group blends rock, funk, R&B, and elements of contemporary Japanese pop, built around Daiki Tsuneta’s eclectic songwriting and Satoru Iguchi’s distinctive falsetto vocals, which together give the band a sound that feels both experimental and radio-friendly.

King Gnu broke into the mainstream with singles like «白日 (Hakujitsu)» and «Teenager Forever», which became anthems of Japan’s late-2010s music scene, often tied to major television dramas and commercials. Their popularity grew further with anime tie-in tracks such as «SPECIALZ», used as an opening theme for «Jujutsu Kaisen», introducing the band to a wide international audience beyond Japan.

Known for genre-crossing arrangements that shift between aggressive rock instrumentation and smooth, jazz-influenced grooves, King Gnu has become one of the defining acts of modern Japanese rock. Tsuneta’s side projects and production work have also cemented the band’s reputation as key tastemakers within the current J-pop and rock landscape.
