Katatonia

Katatonia is a Swedish metal band from Stockholm, formed in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. Starting out in the death/doom metal scene alongside peers like Opeth, the band gradually evolved through the 1990s into a darker, melodic form of alternative and progressive metal, eventually shedding harsh vocals in favor of Renkse's melancholic clean singing. This shift, most evident from albums like «Tonight's Decision» and «Last Fair Deal Gone Down» onward, helped define a distinctly Nordic strain of gothic-tinged rock.

Over more than a dozen studio albums, Katatonia built a reputation for atmospheric, guitar-driven songwriting steeped in themes of isolation and introspection. Records such as «Viva Emptiness», «The Great Cold Distance» and «Dead End Kings» are frequently cited as high points, showcasing the interplay between Renkse's songwriting and Nyström's guitar textures. The band has also drawn on a rotating cast of collaborators over the years, including members who moved through Opeth, Bloodbath and other Scandinavian metal projects.

Katatonia's most recent album, «City Burials», was released in 2020, continuing their trajectory toward moodier, more expansive arrangements. The band remains a touchstone for fans of melancholic, melodic metal, respected for the consistency of its evolution rather than any single breakout hit.
