About the artist
Kaizers Orchestra are a Norwegian alternative rock band from Rogaland, formed in Bergen in 2000 by vocalist Janove Ottesen and guitarist Geir Zahl, songwriters who grew up around Bryne and the Jæren region of southwestern Norway. That regional background shows up directly in the music: many of their lyrics are delivered in Jærsk dialect, wrapped in dark, theatrical, and often cryptic storytelling that has become one of the band's signatures. The lineup rounds out with Helge Risa on keyboards, Terje Winterstø Røthning on guitar, Øyvind Storesund on double bass, and Rune Solheim on drums.
Musically, Kaizers Orchestra built a distinctive sound by fusing rock and punk energy with Eastern European and Balkan folk influences, brass-tinged arrangements, and a cabaret-like theatricality rarely heard in Scandinavian rock. Songs like «Hjerteknuser», «170», and «Maestro» showcase this mix of driving rhythms, accordion and horn textures, and Ottesen's distinctive vocal delivery. The band's concept-driven albums and elaborate stage shows helped them stand out even within Norway's already strong alternative rock scene.
Over eight studio albums, Kaizers Orchestra became one of Norway's most beloved and commercially successful rock acts, known for their intense live performances and loyal following. They won four Spellemannprisen awards, including Årets spellemann (Album of the Year) in 2012, cementing their status as a defining band of Norwegian rock in the 2000s and 2010s.
