Joy Division

Joy Division were an English post-punk band formed in Manchester in 1976, consisting of singer Ian Curtis, guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. Emerging from the same punk scene that inspired countless British bands after seeing the Sex Pistols perform live, they quickly developed a darker, more atmospheric sound that set them apart from their contemporaries.

Their music was defined by Curtis's bleak, introspective lyrics and baritone vocals, layered over Sumner's spacious, textured guitar work, Hook's melodic, high-register basslines and Morris's mechanical, driving drumming. This combination, refined under producer Martin Hannett, produced two landmark albums, Unknown Pleasures and Closer, widely regarded among the most influential records in post-punk and alternative music history. Songs like «Disorder», «She's Lost Control» and «Atmosphere» showcase the band's icy, hypnotic intensity.

Curtis's death by suicide in May 1980, shortly before the band's first American tour, cut Joy Division's career short, but their influence only grew afterward. The surviving members went on to form New Order, while Joy Division's catalogue, including the posthumously massive hit «Love Will Tear Us Apart», remains foundational to goth, post-punk revival and alternative rock that followed.
