Jonathan Larson

Jonathan Larson (1960–1996) was an American composer and playwright best known as the creator of «Rent», the rock musical that reimagined Puccini's «La Bohème» in the East Village amid the AIDS crisis and gentrification of the 1990s. Raised on Long Island, New York, Larson grew up steeped in the music of Elton John, The Doors and The Beatles, influences audible in his fusion of Broadway storytelling with rock and pop songwriting.

Larson spent years working as a waiter while developing his craft, writing the autobiographical solo piece «Tick, Tick… Boom!» about the frustrations of a struggling composer approaching thirty. That show, later expanded and eventually adapted into a Netflix film directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, drew directly on his own life and anxieties about artistic success.

Larson died suddenly of an aortic aneurysm hours after the final dress rehearsal of «Rent», never seeing the show's acclaim. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential voices in modern American musical theatre.
