Johnny Hobo and The Freight Trains

Johnny Hobo and The Freight Trains were an American anarcho folk punk band active from around 2000 to 2007, fronted by singer-songwriter Pat «the Bunny» Schneeweis. Rotating members over the years included Jeff-Face, Flash-C, Ian Skumfuk, Roman, and Rockstar Mike, contributing harmonica, trumpet, washtub bass, and washboard, though many shows were performed by Pat alone or with whoever happened to be around.

Their sound sat at the raw, stripped-down end of folk punk — acoustic guitar, gang vocals, and scavenged instrumentation delivered with an urgent, ragged intensity. Lyrically the band dwelled on alcohol and drug abuse, anarchist politics, and disillusionment with the punk scene itself, capturing a bleak, confessional honesty that resonated widely within DIY and crust-adjacent circles. Songs like «New Mexico Song», «Church Hymn for the Condemned», and «Acid Song» exemplify this mix of dark humor and despair.

The band's output was modest in volume — a demo, three EPs, a live album, and two splits — but outsized in influence on the American folk punk underground. After the group's breakup in 2007, Pat the Bunny continued in a similar vein with Wingnut Dishwashers Union, cementing his reputation as one of the genre's defining voices.
