John Mellencamp

John Mellencamp is an American singer-songwriter and musician from Seymour, Indiana, who became one of the defining voices of heartland rock in the late 1970s and 1980s. Recording early on under the stage names Johnny Cougar and John Cougar before reclaiming his own name, he built a career on plainspoken songs about small-town life, working-class struggle, and the American Midwest, delivered with a raspy, emotionally direct voice.

His commercial breakthrough came with albums like «American Fool», which produced hits such as «Jack & Diane» and «Hurts So Good». He followed with a run of successful records including «Uh-Huh» and «Scarecrow», the latter reflecting his growing engagement with farm-crisis politics through songs like «Rain on the Scarecrow». Alongside Willie Nelson and Neil Young, Mellencamp co-founded Farm Aid in 1985 to support American family farmers, cementing his image as a socially conscious heartland artist.
