About the artist
John Cale is a Welsh composer, singer-songwriter and producer whose work has spanned classical avant-garde, rock and pop experimentation since the 1960s. Born in Wales and trained as a classical violist, he moved to New York to study with modern composers and became immersed in the city's avant-garde scene alongside figures like John Cage and La Monte Young. In 1965 he co-founded The Velvet Underground with Lou Reed, bringing his drone-based experimental sensibility to the band's landmark early records before leaving in 1968.
As a solo artist Cale built a body of work that moves fluidly between austere art rock, chamber pop and electronic textures, with albums such as «Paris 1919» standing as a high point of his melodic, orchestrated songwriting. His haunting piano rendition of Leonard Cohen's «Hallelujah» became one of the most influential covers in modern music, shaping countless later interpretations.
Cale is equally known for his production work, having helmed influential records for Nico, The Stooges, The Modern Lovers and Patti Smith, helping define the sound of proto-punk and art rock. Decades into his career he remains an active, restlessly inventive artist unafraid of pushing into new sonic territory.
