Jimmy Cliff

Jimmy Cliff, born James Chambers in Jamaica, was one of the key figures who brought ska and reggae to a global audience, working alongside pioneering producer Leslie Kong from the late 1960s onward. Rather than emerging from the Rastafarian tradition that shaped many of his reggae peers, Cliff practiced Islam, giving his music and public persona a distinct place within the genre.

His biggest international breakthrough came through the 1972 film The Harder They Come, in which he starred and for which he recorded the title track along with songs like «Many Rivers to Cross» and «You Can Get It If You Really Want», tracks that helped define reggae's crossover into world consciousness and remain touchstones of the genre. His voice combined soulful, gospel-tinged warmth with the loping rhythms of ska and rocksteady, giving his music broad appeal beyond Jamaica.

Cliff continued to record and perform for decades, later finding renewed mainstream success with his version of «I Can See Clearly Now», and remained active as both a musician and actor. He was honored with Jamaica's Order of Merit, one of the nation's highest distinctions in music, recognizing his role as an ambassador who carried reggae and Jamaican culture to audiences worldwide.
