About the artist
Jerry Lee Lewis was an American pianist and singer, and one of the founding architects of rock and roll. Raised in Louisiana, he signed with Sun Records in Memphis in the mid-1950s, joining a roster that included Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison. Unlike his labelmates, Lewis built his sound around ferocious, percussive piano playing, delivered with wild stage antics that made him one of the genre's most electrifying live performers.
His 1957 recordings of «Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On» and «Great Balls of Fire» turned him into an international star, blending rockabilly energy with boogie-woogie piano and a defiant, sexually charged performance style that helped define early rock's rebellious image. His career suffered a severe setback in 1958 after his marriage to his young cousin became public, which effectively derailed his mainstream pop stardom for years.
Despite the scandal, Lewis never stopped performing, later finding renewed success in country music and remaining a touring and recording artist for decades. Nicknamed "The Killer," he is remembered as one of rock's essential pioneers, influencing generations of piano-driven rock and country performers.
