About the artist
Jai Paul is an English singer, songwriter and producer from Rayners Lane in northwest London, and one of the most mysterious and influential figures in 2010s alternative pop and R&B. Signed to XL Recordings, he emerged around 2010 with the demo «BTSTU», a track built on warped, glitchy production and falsetto vocals that quickly caught the attention of major artists — most famously Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who sampled it for «End of Time», and Drake, who referenced it as well. The song's blend of distorted samples, unconventional song structure and lo-fi intimacy became hugely influential on a generation of producers working in the space between pop, R&B and electronic music.
His only other official release, «Jasmine», followed a similar aesthetic and cemented his reputation as a singular sonic innovator despite an extremely small output. In April 2013, what appeared to be a full collection of unfinished tracks — including songs like «Str8 Outta Mumbai», «He» and «Zion Wolf Theme» — surfaced on Bandcamp under his name; its origins and authorization remained disputed, and it was widely misreported as a leaked debut album rather than a deliberate release.
Jai Paul has maintained an almost total absence from public life since, giving virtually no interviews and rarely performing, which has only deepened his cult status. His XL Recordings founder Richard Russell described him as working in ways that are baffling to outsiders but entirely consistent with his own singular creative logic — an assessment that captures how, with just a handful of tracks, Jai Paul reshaped the sound of contemporary alternative pop and R&B production.
