Iron & Wine

Iron & Wine is the recording project of American singer-songwriter Sam Beam, known for hushed, literary songwriting steeped in the imagery of the rural American South. He began recording lo-fi, largely acoustic material at home in the early 2000s, releasing it through the Sub Pop label, whose intimate, whispery textures set him apart from the louder indie-rock landscape of the time.

As his career progressed, Beam's sound broadened considerably, incorporating fuller band arrangements, horns, strings, and more expansive folk-rock and even soul-inflected production while retaining his distinctively soft-spoken vocal delivery. His songwriting is marked by dense natural and religious imagery, tracing themes of memory, family, mortality, and rural life with a poetic, almost short-story-like sensibility, as heard in songs such as «Naked as We Came» and «The Trapeze Swinger».

Iron & Wine gained wider mainstream recognition after his cover of the Postal Service's «Such Great Heights» appeared in the film Garden State, and his original song «Flightless Bird, American Mouth» later featured prominently in the Twilight film series. Beam has also collaborated with artists including Calexico, further expanding his sonic palette beyond his early folk foundations.
