After a string of vocalist changes in the early years, Anders Fridén, formerly of Dark Tranquillity, became the band's permanent singer in 1995, forming the lineup that would record acclaimed albums such as The Jester Race and Whoracle. Guitarist Björn Gelotte, who initially joined as a drummer, became a defining creative force alongside Fridén as the band's sound evolved over the decades from melodic death metal toward a more modern, alternative-tinged metal approach.

Songs such as «Only for the Weak», «Take This Life», «Cloud Connected» and «I, the Mask» trace the band's shift from their Gothenburg-metal roots toward broader mainstream metal audiences, while «Come Clarity» and «Pinball Map» reflect later stylistic experimentation. In Flames remain one of the most influential and internationally successful bands to emerge from the Gothenburg melodic death metal scene.
