Ian Gillan

Ian Gillan is an English singer and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist of Deep Purple, one of the pioneering acts of hard rock and heavy metal. He joined the band in 1969, and his powerful, wide-ranging voice became a defining feature of classic tracks like «Smoke on the Water», helping cement Deep Purple's place alongside Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin as founders of the genre. Before his lasting association with Deep Purple, Gillan gained early attention for originating the role of Jesus on the studio concept album Jesus Christ Superstar, a performance still regarded as one of rock's great vocal interpretations of the part.

Gillan's career has been marked by several notable departures from and returns to Deep Purple. In the early 1980s he stepped away to front his own band, Gillan, which blended hard rock with a rawer, punk-influenced edge and found considerable commercial success in the UK. He later spent a period as the vocalist for Black Sabbath, recording and touring the «Born Again» album in 1983 before rejoining Deep Purple.
