I Hate Myself

I Hate Myself was an American emo band formed in Gainesville, Florida, in 1996 by brothers Jim Marburger (lead vocals, guitar) and Jon Marburger (drums, percussion, backing vocals, bass), later joined by Steve Jin on bass and backing vocals. The band emerged from the same fertile Gainesville scene that produced acts like Hot Water Music and other influential emo and screamo groups of the era, and became known for their raw, deeply personal songwriting delivered through fragile, confessional vocals set against melodic but abrasive guitar work.

Musically, I Hate Myself belonged to the emotionally intense strand of 1990s emo often associated with the second-wave scene, marked by dynamic shifts between quiet, vulnerable passages and cathartic bursts of noise. Their song titles, often long, whimsical, and darkly humorous, stood in stark contrast to the raw emotional content of the lyrics, a tension that became part of their signature style.
