About the artist

Hum are an American rock band from Champaign, Illinois, formed in 1989 around guitarist and vocalist Matt Talbot. Emerging from the Midwest post-hardcore and emo underground, the band recorded an early demo with Steve Albini that circulated widely and built their local reputation before their debut album, Fillet Show, appeared in 1991. Their sound evolved quickly, moving from the rawer noise of that first record toward the denser, atmospheric guitar textures explored on Electra 2000 in 1993, which drew comparisons to shoegaze acts like My Bloody Valentine.

Hum reached their commercial peak with You’d Prefer an Astronaut in 1995, an album that fused heavy, downtuned guitars with melodic, dreamlike vocals. The single «Stars» became a surprise radio and MTV hit after airing on Beavis and Butt-Head, introducing the band to a mainstream audience that its underground roots had not anticipated. Songs like «I’d Like Your Hair Long» and «Suicide Machine» showcased the same blend of heaviness and melody that defined the record.

The band released one more studio album, Downward Is Heavenward, in 1998, before breaking up shortly after due to lukewarm commercial reception. Despite a relatively small discography, Hum are frequently cited as an influence on the space rock and post-hardcore scenes, admired for pairing crushing riffs with ethereal, layered vocal melodies.
