Hole

Hole is an American alternative rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1989 by singer and guitarist Courtney Love. Emerging from the same LA underground scene that produced much of the era's grunge and punk crossover acts, Hole became one of the defining bands of Nineties alternative rock, pairing raw, distortion-heavy guitars with confessional, often confrontational lyrics. The band's most celebrated lineup featured Love alongside guitarist Eric Erlandson, bassist Melissa Auf der Maur and drummer Patty Schemel.

Hole's sound moved from the abrasive noise-rock of their early work toward a more polished, radio-friendly alternative rock on later releases, without losing its emotional intensity. Songs like «Celebrity Skin», «Doll Parts», «Violet» and «Malibu» showcase Love's distinctive songwriting, mixing vulnerability with defiance, and helped the band achieve both critical acclaim and mainstream success.

After releasing several acclaimed albums, the original lineup dissolved around 2000, and Love pursued solo work before reviving the Hole name for a further album in the following decade. Hole remains a touchstone for alternative and punk-influenced rock, and Love's songwriting and public persona left a lasting imprint on Nineties rock culture.
