Happy Mondays

Happy Mondays are an English alternative rock band from Salford, Greater Manchester, formed in 1980. Fronted by Shaun Ryder, with his brother Paul Ryder on bass, Mark Day on guitar, Paul Davis on keyboards, and Gary Whelan on drums, the band became central figures of the late-1980s and early-1990s Madchester scene, fusing indie guitar rock with acid house rhythms, funk grooves, and dance beats in a way few of their peers attempted. Dancer and percussionist Mark «Bez» Berry became an inseparable part of their onstage identity, and vocalist Rowetta joined as a guest singer in 1990.

The band's sound, loose, groove-driven, and built for the dancefloor as much as for guitars, helped define an era when indie and rave culture collided. Signature tracks like «Kinky Afro», «Step On», and «Wrote for Luck» captured that fusion, pairing Ryder's slurred, stream-of-consciousness lyrics with hypnotic basslines and shuffling beats, while «Loose Fit» and «God's Cop» further showcased their idiosyncratic songwriting.

Happy Mondays' influence extended well beyond their chart success, shaping the sound and attitude of British guitar music through the 1990s and cementing Manchester's reputation as a hub for the acid house and indie-dance crossover. Songs like «24 Hour Party People» later lent their name to cultural retrospectives of that scene, underlining the band's lasting association with the era they helped create.
