Hail the Sun

Hail the Sun are an American post-hardcore band from Chico, California, formed in 2009. The lineup has centered on lead vocalist and drummer Donovan Melero, whose unusual choice to sing while drumming became one of the band's defining traits, alongside guitarists Shane Gann and Aric Garcia and bassist John Stirrat. Their sound blends intricate, math-rock-inflected guitar work with melodic, emotionally direct vocal lines, drawing comparisons to bands like Dance Gavin Dance while carving out a distinct identity within the post-hardcore and progressive rock underground.

Over the course of two EPs and several full-length albums, the band built a reputation for technically demanding songwriting paired with introspective, often anxious lyrical themes touching on mental health and personal struggle. Songs such as «Human Target Practice», «Black Serotonin», and «Disappearing Syndrome» showcase their tendency to alternate between jagged, angular riffing and unexpectedly catchy hooks.
