GWAR

GWAR are an American shock rock and thrash metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia in 1984. Built around an elaborate science-fiction mythology, the band performs in grotesque, monstrous costumes and stages theatrical concerts featuring mock slaughters of celebrities and political figures, drenching audiences in fake blood and other fluids. This spectacle has made GWAR as famous for its live performance art as for its music.

Musically, GWAR combines thrash and punk aggression with satirical, often absurdist lyrics that skewer politics, religion, and pop culture, heard in songs like «Sick of You» and «Saddam A Go-Go». The band operates under an ever-changing roster of alien-warrior alter egos, with founding vocalist Oderus Urungus (Dave Brockie) serving as its most iconic frontman until his death in 2014, after which longtime bassist Mike Bishop took over lead vocals as Blothar The Berzerker.

Beyond music, GWAR built a multimedia brand encompassing comic books, films, and merchandise, cultivating a devoted cult following. Decades after its formation, the band continues to tour and record, remaining one of the most theatrically extreme acts in heavy music.
