Guided by Voices

Guided by Voices is an American indie rock band from Dayton, Ohio, formed in 1983 around singer-songwriter Robert Pollard, the group's constant creative force through a long history of shifting lineups. The band built a cult following in the early-to-mid 1990s through a prolific string of lo-fi, home-recorded albums, most notably «Bee Thousand» and «Alien Lanes», which became touchstones of the American indie rock underground for their fragmented, fast-cut song structures and hiss-laden production.

Pollard's songwriting draws on British Invasion melodicism, psychedelia, and punk energy, compressed into songs that often run under two minutes and favor evocative, impressionistic imagery over linear narrative. Tracks like «Game of Pricks», «I Am a Scientist», and «Echos Myron» exemplify the band's knack for hook-laden fragments that feel simultaneously anthemic and unfinished, a quality that became central to their aesthetic rather than a limitation of their means.

The band broke up in 2004, reunited its classic lineup in 2010 for a Matador Records anniversary show, then split again before Pollard revived the Guided by Voices name with new members in 2016. Across all these phases the group has remained one of the most staggeringly prolific acts in rock, with Pollard's restless output extending into numerous side projects and solo records alongside the band's own enormous catalog.
