Gregory Isaacs

Gregory Isaacs (1951–2010) was a Jamaican reggae singer widely regarded as one of the genre's most influential vocalists, earning the nickname «the Cool Ruler» for his smooth, unhurried delivery and effortless stage presence. Emerging from Kingston's reggae scene in the 1970s, he became a defining figure of the lovers rock style, a subgenre that paired reggae rhythms with romantic, soulful lyricism.

His voice, silky and understated rather than forceful, gave songs like «Night Nurse» and «Cool Down the Pace» their distinctive intimacy, and «Night Nurse» in particular became one of the most recognized reggae songs internationally, helping bring lovers rock to wider audiences beyond Jamaica. Alongside romantic material, Isaacs also addressed social and political themes common to roots reggae of the era, giving his catalog a range that spanned tender balladry and sharper commentary.

Over a career spanning several decades, he recorded prolifically across numerous labels and worked with many of Jamaica's leading producers and musicians, cementing a legacy as one of reggae's most enduring and widely covered voices.
