grandson, born Jordan Benjamin, is an alternative rock and rap-influenced artist raised in Toronto, Canada after an early childhood in New Jersey. Growing up around a wide mix of jazz, rock, rap, dancehall, and R&B, he taught himself guitar and piano before moving to Montreal for university, where he worked nightclub jobs and began writing and producing music. He later dropped out to relocate to Los Angeles and pursue music full-time, adopting the grandson name.

His sound fuses heavy rock guitars and live-band energy with hip-hop rhythmic sensibility and electronic production, drawing on influences from Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, and Led Zeppelin alongside Toronto's rap and R&B scene and acts like Twenty One Pilots.
