About the artist

Grand Funk Railroad is an American hard rock band formed in Flint, Michigan, in 1969, with a name playing on the Grand Trunk Western Railroad line that runs through the city. The classic lineup featured Mark Farner on guitar and vocals, Don Brewer on drums and vocals, and Mel Schacher on bass, and later added keyboardist Craig Frost. Emerging just as the 1960s counterculture gave way to the arena-rock era, the band built its reputation on relentless touring and a raw, riff-driven sound rather than critical praise.

They became known for packing stadiums even before radio caught up with them, famously selling out New York's Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles had. Their commercial peak came with hits like «We're an American Band», «The Loco-Motion» — a cover that became a chart-topping hit in its own right — and «Some Kind of Wonderful», tracks that showcased a hookier, more polished sound than their heavier early records.

Grand Funk Railroad's mix of blue-collar hard rock and crowd-pleasing arena anthems made them one of the defining bands of early-1970s American rock, influencing later hard rock and classic rock radio staples even as critics of the era were often dismissive of them.
