Gotye

Gotye is the stage name of Wouter «Wally» De Backer, a musician born in Belgium who moved to Australia as a young child. Working across pop, rock, and electronic textures, he built his early albums largely as a solo, home-studio project, layering samples, live instrumentation, and his own vocals into richly detailed arrangements. He is also a founding member of the Melbourne band The Basics.

Gotye's breakthrough came with the 2011 album «Making Mirrors», anchored by the single «Somebody That I Used to Know» featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra. The track became a global phenomenon, topping charts in more than twenty countries and winning multiple Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year. Its stark, sample-driven production and the interplay between Gotye's and Kimbra's vocals made it one of the defining pop singles of its era.

Beyond that single, his catalogue includes earlier albums built on similarly inventive production, mixing melancholic songwriting with unconventional sonic textures. Following his commercial peak, Gotye largely stepped back from the mainstream pop spotlight, focusing on more experimental and collaborative work while remaining a respected figure for his craftsmanship as a producer and multi-instrumentalist.
