Gogol Bordello is an American band formed in New York City in the late 1990s by frontman Eugene Hütz, a Ukrainian-born musician who fuses Romani (gypsy) folk traditions with punk rock and dub to create their signature «gypsy punk» sound. The band's name is drawn from Nikolai Gogol, the Russian-Ukrainian writer who wove Ukrainian culture into Russian literature, reflecting the band's own mission of channeling Eastern European folk influences into Western rock music; «Bordello» nods to the chaotic, riotous energy of their live shows.
