Godsmack

Godsmack is an American alternative metal band from Lawrence, Massachusetts, formed in 1995 around frontman and songwriter Sully Erna. Rounded out by guitarist Tony Rombola, bassist Robbie Merrill and drummer Shannon Larkin, the band emerged from the late-90s post-grunge and nu-metal wave with a heavier, more aggressive edge rooted in hard rock and metal traditions.

The group built a reputation as one of rock radio’s most consistent hitmakers, scoring numerous top-ten and number-one rock radio singles across two decades. Songs like «Voodoo», «I Stand Alone», «Awake» and «Whatever» showcase Erna’s gravelly, forceful vocal delivery over Rombola’s riff-driven guitar work, while later tracks such as «Under Your Scars» and «When Legends Rise» leaned into more melodic, anthemic songwriting without abandoning the band’s heavy foundation.

Godsmack’s sound draws comparisons to acts like Alice in Chains and Metallica, blending grunge-era heaviness with metal precision and radio-friendly hooks.
